2001 Dodge Stratus F4A51 Transmission
Transmission pump failed. Removed transmission to find torque converter
will not disengage from input shaft. Moves only 3/8 ". Suspect that pump bushing is seized on converter. Rebuilt a lot of transmissions, but have never had this happen before. Any ideas how to remove the converter?

Because I am a thrifty person, I cannot see paying the $2500.00 for a reman transmission. After all it is nothing more than a over sized hydraulic pump. Glad all my years at sea taught me that you make do with what you have because there are no repair centers 800 miles out at sea. I hung the transmission from the converter about 4 inches above soft ground (centered so as not to bend input shaft) with a come-along. Then gently tapped around the perimeter of the case with soft wood and a BFH (hammer). After about ten minutes of steady work it slipped right off gently onto the ground. I was right, the pump bushing had been seized onto the converter. Now it can be rebuilt (transmission) with new converter and pump.
