Default 2001 Dodge Stratus R/T jumping into drive?

I just bought an automatic 3.0L V6 Stratus R/T Coupe. For some odd jumps into drive and jolts the car a bit. From park to drive or reverse to drive, it always jumps. After I put it into drive (it's parked facing the road) the rpm goes up a bit past 1k (my foot is still on the brakes) and the car jumps and the rpm goes back down into normal. If I try to give it gas it would jolt even harder (is the idle RPM too high?) The car has no problem changing gears when accelerating only when setting it to drive.

Also, one more problem. I drove the car on the freeway for around 50 minutes, and when I parked the car I smelt something burning (oil?) and saw just a little white smoke coming from the edge of the hood closest to the driver side. When I opened the hood I couldn't see where it was coming from exactly. The person I bought it from said the car hasn't been driven for a month, but the oil has been changed and timing belt was replaced.

I hope these problem aren't major because this car is just fantastic to ride..

Welcome to DF
My first guess is the transmission is going into fail safe/limp in. Is the ck engine light on?

No check engine lights are not on. So far I'm just compiling a list of things to look at this weekend, because I can't now. I've been searching around and some suspects of this problem might be the air intake/sensor, idle air control, throttle body, and the motor mount- they all seem like probable causes.

I'm going to put in some Techron in the gas too and see if that does anything.
