2001 Stratus - Transmission Problem? - Car revs up but refuses to move
Hello,
Today has not been going well for me ):
My 2001 Dodge Stratus (Automatic Transmission, 3.0 L v6, 97k miles) that I just bought a few weeks ago seems to be having a transmission issue. I was driving about 75 mph in cruise control and everything seemed perfectly fine until suddenly I noticed it Rev'd up with the RPMs in the red and the car started deaccelerating, service engine light came on. As soon as all this happened I tapped the breaks to stop the cruise control and the RPM dropped down. While my car was coasting I tried to hit the gas and it would not accelerate (unless you count negative acceleration) but the RPMs would go up. I then pulled my car over and parked along side the highway and turned it off. After waiting a few minutes I turned it on and it started with no problem. I put it in Drive and gave it some gas but the same thing happened: Car revs up (RPM goes up) but car refuses to move; same thing with Reverse.
Right now my car is parked along side the freeway, 2 hours away from where I am now so I cannot really take a look at it, at least not until I can get down there again which should be around 3:30 pm CST. I called to get it towed so it should be moved to a car shop shortly. The car shop might be able to fix it after they take a look at it. I will have to drive down there anyway to give them my keys.
Anyway, I was wondering what you guys or gals thought what the issue might be based on these symptoms. Or if you have any advice as to what to look for in troubleshooting or fixing.
Also I should point out I didn't smell anything burning, no unusual noises when the issue happened (or if there were strange noises I couldn't hear them over my music and car revving up). This happened out of the blue with no warning.
I am hoping that it is not the transmission but rather the linkage from the transmission.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advanced! I will be try to be checking back on this frequently to answer any questions.

OP, if you're near Kingman AZ, Kermit's Garage is the only place you need to take the car too.

I understand this thread is old. But a comon problem with the mitsubishi auto trannys of that generation is a failing wave ring. This along with some transmission filters that had the element stamped off center can pull some pieces of the wave ring in to the oil pump. The pump in turn shatters when the steel wave ring makes it past the filter. Hence no go, and no limp mode either.
