Default a few questions of what i am seeing behind timing cover

2004 dodge stratus sxt 2.4 single over head cam

scanned, found 2 codes... 1 for cam sensor and 1 for crank sensor

keep driving till one day at store it wouldnt start when i cam out, pulled it home

Replace cam sensor and the car started cleared codes but they both came back on with in a block.

Garaged car and removed timing cover thanks to this forum i found the crank sensor behind the lower timing cover as in the pic below:

The i noticed a smaller belt that runs behind the timing belt (destroyed), it looks like it should ride on the pulley but the spot it should ride was not shiny, it was kinda rusty so it may have been like that a while.

so now i think not only should i replace the crank sensor but the timing belt and pulleys,,,,what do u think?

The smaller belt is the balance shaft belt. I did an engine swap on an Eclipse once (Old engine was badly abused by previous owner but still ran) and that belt was broken and laying there like yours. I havent checked mine in a long time, and I dont know how important it is to be honest.

If you change the timing belt, youll want to change the belt, the bearings (pulleys), timing belt tensioner, and water pump.

thank you , i found a gates timing belt kit for 63 bucks which includes the timing belt and the smaller belt and 3 other components i will look for a water pump also

[edit] the water pump isnt ran by the timing belt and im doing the job (not paying a shop) so when it needs replacing ill do that.[/edit]

Ok im stumped replaced both the cam and crank sensors and cleared codes . After stepping on the gas the check engine light comes back on (it actually say it found 4 codes

but they are the same codes po335 and and 340 only the the second set has a pd next to them.

While changing out the crank sensor i replaced the timing belt and 3 pullys and the balancer belt which caused oil to gush out on the floor. ( well it didnt do that before)

So i took it all apart and left off the balancer belt and the oil leak was gone

The car runs fine but that darn check engine light is still on... any ideas?

I assume you reset the code with the scanner? Did you have the battery unhooked during any of this?

If you did both those things then you still have an issue some how. Only thing I can think of is a cut wire somewhere. When my cam sensor was bad the car ran terribly.

yes the battery was disconnected during all r&r work, warmed up engine and scanned and cleared several times once cleared light would go off then come back on when i rev-ed it up.

I will look it over and see if i notice any bad connections or wiring.

thanks
