Knocking noise when driving straight

Knocking noise when driving straight
I have a 2004 V6 Stratus SXT that has developed a strange knocking noise.
It can be felt through the steering and only occurs when driving straight ahead. Turn the wheel and it stops. it is intermittent and does not vary with engine speed or car speed, when it starts it's kind of - knock, knock......knock.....knok, knock, knock.............knock.
The best way I can describe it is that it feels like a sticking metal joint that doesn't move smoothly, except I'm not turning the steering wheel.
It could be suspension, or steering I have no idea - anyone come across this before or have any ideas.
Thanks
Newton

RE: Knocking noise when driving straight
I would take it to the dealer since it is still under warranty too. Mine is in the shop right now becuase of the engine light coming on and I don't want to chance anything since mine is still under warranty. Sounds like you have the same one as I do. Is yours 4 door or 2 door? I have a 2004 Dodge Stratus SXT V6 4 door!

RE: Knocking noise when driving straight
Thanks for the responses guys.
I have a 4 door 2004 SXT with the 2.7L V6 in Pearlescent Jade (where do they get these color names from).
I really didn't want another American car but the dealership was unloading stock and I paid less than $17K for a car that was stickered at $23K and change back in September 2004, and my old Taurus was completely dead so I was in a bind. I like the car with one exception, the engine noise seems to be intrusive, I drive a lot of rentals and nothing is quite so "buzzy" as my Stratus.
I have only done 11,200 miles in just over a year, so if the suspension does need replacement parts so soon I'm concerned about future reliability.
My warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles which I think is standard - hopefully they won't give me any trouble at the dealership because the car is now over a year old as I know that some of the warranty coverage starts to drop off after time.
I just have that horrible feeling that they will return it to me with a "couldn't find a thing wrong with it, even on the test drive" statement, because the fault isn't immediately in your face obvious.
