Fuel Pressure Regulator??
I'm looking for a little input on fuel pressure regulators, what exactly is the point if any with upgrading them?
i understand doing it for boost applications like turbo, but can anything be gained with a non turbo engine?

no.
the stock FPR is generally designed to put out a given amount of pressure. if adjustable, the stock unit only allows so much adjustment. some people change them for boosting applications to increase the fuel pressure to make certain that they are not going lean at any point. so unless you had some sort of problem with your fuel system, i cannot see an aftermarket FPR making much of a difference, it any.

if you do upgrade the FPR and don't go with a better fuel pump you also run the risk of going lean. with the stock pump the flow drops as the press goes up (sounds jacked i know). what happens is the pump "spins" trying to put out press it can't realy handle, and ends up compressing the fuel instead of pumping it. like badstrat said unless your building up you engine, your tossing out $$.
actually the main reason i wanted info on regulators is that i was given the impression that i could use one to eliminate the crackle/ popping on the downshift from unburnt gas igniting in the exhaust....
Does that make sense or any other suggestions?

i dont know if youve seen any very high performance imports (800-1000hp) but they also backfire through the exhaust when you back off of it...hell, they backfire any time you let off...even the mirada does it...
when you back off it you close the TB butterfly getting a rich condition. as the rich exhaust goes to the exhaust it lights up causing press wave going to AND from the engine AND flames out the hipo pipes. basicly your dumping raw fuel into the ex-pipes. happy motoring.

my 78 D150 was the best..it had a mechanic fuel pump, so when i was coasting down a hill, i could turn off the engine, wait a second, and turn it back on, and it would blow flames out the tailpipes!
it was great until it blew the exhaust system apart one night...[8D]
