Default 2000 Cirrus trans

Hello everyone. Glad I found this site. Hopefully I can get some questions answereds. Specs, 2000 Cirrus, auto trans, 2.4L, approx. 62,000 miles. Info, This weekend, wife was driving back from the store when the car stopped accelerating. Right before it slowed to a stop, the car went back into drive and accelerated once again. The car went abouta mile down the road and the car did it again and came to a full stop and would not go forward (just go in reverse). She gave me a call and I went to pick her up and tried to see what was wrong with the car. I started her up, put it in drive a went forward. I went approx. 100 feet when I heard a high pitch sound coming from under the car. I continued to move forward and then the trans went into neutral. Right before the car stopped, the trans went back into drive with the high pitch sound still present and continued to the house. With all that I just provided, is the trans gone or what seems to be the problem?

I wish I knew more about these new computer controlled transmissions, but I don't. First off I would start with the accursed computer for the tranny. I'll never undestand why they started putting computers in to contol the auto trans., they worked just fine without them 20 yrs. ago thats why the newer cars I buy will have to be a standard trans. If it isn't the computer, it sounds like it's rebuild time. It sounds like the clutchs are shot and are slipping badly. Hopefully it's the computer, it's cheaper and easier than a rebuild. <img border="0" src=smileys/smiley5.gif border="0">

Hi, I have the exact same car and had the same problem. The first time it happend I check it with an OBDII scanner and it was the input speed sensor. I replaced it and it worked fine. Then a couple of weeks later, it happened again, this time the culprit was the output speed sensor. I should have replaced them both at the same time. I have not had anymore problems and it has been about a year now. I am almost positive this is your problem. Let me know how it turns out.
