Default blowing frost from vents

Hi all,
i did a search and couldnt find anything quite like this.
I have a 1999 Ram 1500 quad 4x4 with the 360 engine. My a/c blows really cold, but after just 5 minutes or so, frost starts blowing out the vents. Also, if i turn the control anywhere except on the coldest setting, it really smells bad. Smells almost like old coolant from the engine. Maybe smelling old refrigerant??

The smell is even worse if the controls are set to just vent, instead of A/C. Other than this I'm not having any problems with the truck.

Thanks for any help

Steve

I would say check for a small leak in the evaporator.

frost, dang thats cold air.
welcome to df. if you don't get a response you might repost in the ram or dakota section, some, like me, don't venture outside those forums much due to the clutter.
sorry, i can't help with the ac, but to reduce odor you can turn on defroster or ac and spray Lysol into the cowl area. spray in a lot and let it suck it in, then turn def off and let it soak in the ducts. it eliminates the mildew. repeat monthly.
