Default dodge Caravan Evaporator Issue!!!please help

hi guys, i have a 98 dodge caravan with a ac problem!! every time i refill the AC with frion, after 2 days the cold air goes away!!! A mechanic tel me it was the evaporator that had a leak and it has to be replace!! he tell me that i had to take out all the dash and the steering wheel to replace the evaporator!!! is this true!! where exacly is the evaporator??? he was charging me 1200 dollars for this job!! is any way i can do it myself!????! thanks for any help!!

#1 If you have never done much on a vehicle, doing this is ALOT and I mean ALOT of work doing evap cores. Yes you do have to take the dash off and the steering column. Its something that takes a while to do. Have Dodge check it out and quote you a price on the job or Find a trusty garage to quote you to do it. Call around to different places n see what the prices are then make your choice, because some garages will say something thats a big job which MAY not be the defective part. So have some place that is WELL KNOWN for good work and HONESTY do the job.

Yes, the dash will need to come out to replace the evaporator. Takes about 6 to 8 hrs.
