I haven't tried any sort of diagnostic tool..don't know anyone who has one!

You don't need a scan tool. If you're check engine light is on, turn the ignition key on, off, on, off, and then on. The check engine light will then begin to flash the two digit codes. Lets say the it go flash, flash flash, small pause, flash, flash, flash. That would be code 33. Do that and let us know what you come up with.

You should automatically get three codes if I remember right....code 11 (I think it's 11 anyway), which is the beginning of the cycle (not a trouble code), code 55 which is the end of cycle code (again, not a trouble code), and code 37. Code 37 is for the torque converter clutch solenoid. Even though you have an automatic w/overdrive, it's not a lock-up torque converter, so you'll always get that code.

It's not on..but I get what you're saying. Will that also apply to a situation when the light isn't on? Or no?

Well, if a code is set, the light should come on. I would try it anyway...at the very least you'll be able to make sure if the light is working or not.

I'd give her a Full Tune-up to start.... Cap, Rotors, Wires, spark plugs a Fuel Filter and a fuel system cleaner in the tank!!
