Default Chevy question

I know it is a dodge forum, but I was wondering if anyone knows the answer to my question. I have a 5spd manual transmission from a 2.8 liter 88 camaro. I was told you can get the correct bell housing to match a 350, but I was wondering if it would hold up to a 350 with about 350hp and about 400 lbs ft of torque. I have an 88 parts car with the pedals and shifter and transmission and everthing, so I was wondering if it would work. I would try asking in the camaro forums but it seems pretty dead over there.

i dont think that the V6 transmission would hold up to much built-v8 beating..

as for the camaroforum, ask around there...you might not geta reply as fast, but there are some guys there who really know their stuff.

Yeah, thanks pat. I was just over there and posted, not quite as dead as I thought, so we will see. I looked through some threads over there and it seems that a few of the guys are running the same 5spd on 305's, so it might work...

Not sure if they are built 305s in these cars you refer to but the 88 305 in the Camaro was only in the neighborhood of 220HP from the factory. The 350 that year was 245HP. Although the 350 was around 345ftlb of torque.

A stock 5spd for a GM 2.8L wont hold up to a high torque 350. A bone stock 305 or truck 350 probably. Source a 5spd from a Z28, SS, trans am, vette to use or just use the T-56 6spd.

I did some researching and have found it is the Borg-Warner T-5 transmission and has been used in loads of cars, mustangs, nissans, camaros, etc. and it seems to be a pretty tough transmission. I would really like to use it because then all I would have to buy is a new clutch...

T-5 transmission even the "world class" one is a piece of **** and when we used them in a Camaro scca AS car we carried two with us to make it thru the weekend! 3rd gear and the cluster shaft were parts of self destruction, even broke 5th a couple of times on the long tracks. Tremec trans we put in has not broken yet. BW T-5 was devloped for 4 cyl Chevette! corp bean counters thinking it will work in everything! (****ing engineers)

Ok so, if I do use it, do you feel it will last? At all? How long?

Depends. Seen 350 S10's go thousands of miles on a stock tranny and rear end and some just not survive 10 miles (V8 S-trucks were popular in this area for a while). neighbor had a 400hp one running through a STOCK 7.5" rear end and never had problems.
