Default Check Engine, GEN and Voltmeter

Started my '96 Ram 1500 yesterday. It immediately ran rough (not normal)and the "GEN" light came on and stayed on (also not normal). Within a minute or two the Check Engine light came on and looking for other malfunctions, I noticed the needle in the voltmeter had pinned itself to the right and was staying there. I shut it down. Any thoughts or suggestions?Am I likely to fry the battery if I drive it to the repair shop (about 25 miles) to get the codes read?

Thanks in advance for any help.

James
