Check Engine, GEN and Voltmeter

Default Check Engine, GEN and Voltmeter

Started my '96 Ram 1500 yesterday. It immediately ran rough (not normal)and the "GEN" light came on and stayed on (also not normal). Within a minute or two the Check Engine light came on and looking for other malfunctions, I noticed the needle in the voltmeter had pinned itself to the right and was staying there. I shut it down. Any thoughts or suggestions?Am I likely to fry the battery if I drive it to the repair shop (about 25 miles) to get the codes read?
