Default Ram 1500 2nd gen, play in steering

My 1999 1500 steering seems to have about 2 and a half inches of free play at the steering wheel rim and tends to wander a bit on the highway. Fluid level ok and no leaks. Anyone had steering troubles? Anything I can check?
Thanks,

Ivan.

Is the suspension worn? Bad ball joints, steering arms, etc. I'd definitely have someone look at it.

Had a look under neath while a friend waggled the wheel, the joint at the end of the Pitman arm bad, will replace ASAP. Thanks for replying, mopartodd.
