Default ATF +4 or gear oil ?

I have a 2002 Neon sxt , manual transaxle. The CHILTON manual calls for ATF+4 automatic Tranny fluid instead of standard transaxle fluid.

Is this correct ? The ATF+4 does not seem to me to be the correct choice. Thanks in advance.

Don't know about your application in particular, but most aluminum case manual transmisions do take ATF. I'm pretty sure yours would too.

Thanks , I am no newbie to car repair but somethings still escape me. I like the ocassional challenge to my knowledge.

You may be laughing because it is such a basic question, but when you learn anything by OJT you miss the finer skills of a school trained tech.

Thanks again !

I was surprised the first time I ran into a manual trans that required ATF. They've been doing it in the aluminum case manuals for about 20 years or so. I just didn't run into one until '99. Glad we could help.

I didn't realize you could use ATF in the power steering until a few years ago.....

Well, you CAN use it in the power steering, but you really shouldn't. It'll work, but it contains detergents that deteriorate the seals in your power steering system. Very much bad things happen after a couple years. The pump on my blazer is so bad now I'm using 90 weight in it...
