People are always gonna believe that what they have/use is the best. Why do you like DOdge? Cause its the "best"

I also have a second gen Intrepid. Second Gens are aproved for synthetic fluids by Chrysler. Personaly , I use Mobil 1 Full synthetic. Works perfectly. I even noticed a power increase when I changed over.
Because of my job I am in the position to play with diffrent oils recently I tested 4 kinds of syntetics.

In my car I used Amsoil 5w/30
Readline 5w/30
Royal Purple 5w/30
Mobil1 5w/30

Each time I used a K&N Gold Filter and changed my oil at 4000 Miles. Granted my results could be affected by traffic, tempature, astral alignment and the price of tea in China but heres what I experenced.

At 4000 miles Amsoil "boiled down" by a fll quart , the oil was CLEAN , REALY CLEAN but I was down a quart . I spoke to a local Amsoil dealer who expalained by saying "That just happens on the thinner oils " I was not comforted by the thought of going a quart low so I tryed Redline. I figured at 8.00 a quart it had to be good. Readline had similar results, not as clean as Amsoil but I was still a quart low at 4000. Then I tried Royal purple , this was the worst in terms of "boiling down" in my engine. I was A quart low at 500 miles.

Which brings me to Mobil. I intentionaly avoided Mobil becasue of all the hype, I was definatly a skeptic. When Royal went a quart low I had to get oil or risk my engine. I bought Mobil 1. I added 1 quart of Mobil to the Royal and the loss stopped. I have been using Mobil 1 ever sence. I have not lost a drop of oil since I changed.

I drive a '90 B-150, 239 V-6. I bought it in 1992 with 18,000 miles on it. I switched to Amsoil with the remote bypass filter, put Amsoil synthetic in the tranny and the rear-end. The odometer quit in 1995 with 105,000. I'm guessing that I have at least 250,000 on it now and all I have ever done is put on starters and water pumps. I swear by Amsoil.

Well if this helps you any, I worked in a oil refinery for thirty years, Mostly in the refining end. I also ran an Octane testing lab for them for 11 years. We made some of the best oils in the world for many years. then we started to buy all the smaller companies. and using there bends to make up our super blends. We got so big that we rated the second biggest refined oil producer in the world. So during this time I would ckeck around to find out who had the best lube oil out there. I was told to look on the top of the can. Read all those codes. The one with the most additives was the best in that grade. So that's why to this day I use Castrol Syntech. Oh by the way ,we bought them out too. But it's still made there way.

I am getting ready to switch to a synthetic this weekend. I had a friend of mine who just switched his 04 Hemi and he was told by a reputable dealership that he needed to run 1 - 2 oil changes of synthetic blend through his engine to condition his rings, valves, etc. before he went all synthetic. Is this true?

Does anyone else see something wrong with someone that has used just one of anything saying they think it is the best with no comparisons involved? The above comments are generally informative and appreciated but what good is it to say I use Mobil 1 and think it is the best w/o something to base that on other than no obvious problems from the Mobil 1? I have no reason to think Mobil 1 is or is not the best. The Amsoil link was interesting until I saw the Jesus portion. If they are relying on devine intervention to prevent wear, I am in trouble.
It is a fact that, overall, synthetics are better than petroleum oil. As to which one is best, opinions differ. I am not sure there is much difference between all of the synthetics. In my case I use Mobil 1 as it is the easiest and cheapest to find. Now I just noticed that Pep Boys started carrying Royal Purple for about the same $, so I might give it a try.

Was running Royal Purple 5W30 (I live in TX and we have to support local, right?!) and 75W140 in the rearend. Some of my hi-po mustang friends think it's the best oil made. I started to research different brands, found the bobistheoilguy.com website. After weeks of researching the UOA's on their website and noticing which oils were coming out better on oil analysis', I switched to Redline 10W40. Noticed an improvement immediately, we're talking "seat of the pants" improvement. The truck seems to just run better. Maybe it's the viscosity difference, don't know. I'm going to have blackstone-labs.com do an analysis after 3k miles. That is the only way to know for sure whick oil is best for your vehicle. If I was to purchase an expensive vehicle, I would try all the major synthetics (after the initial 5k break-in) and have an analysis done on each to determine which is better for my specific application...

I couldnt agree more, I think it is so BS that the manufacturing companies have confused society into thinking that you will have a longer life motor by using thier product. On an episode of Mythbusters, they ran a motor and drained the oil out of it to get it to stop running (like you see on the commercials) and they couldnt stop this motor from running. They added draino, a penny in the carburator, sugar in the gas tank and nothing seemed to phase the motor. (The only thing that caused damage was adding bleach in the gastank which caused rust)
When you see an old rusted car with the wheels falling off and has 300k miles are you thinking "im sure they had to of used (insert name brand oil here) in order to have that many miles"? Im sure they bought the el cheapo Walmart brand. Bottom line, dont think by spending more, your doing your motor a favor and it will be kind back to you.
