Could someone explain Rear Axle Ratios to me please?
Sorry for sounding so much like a noob i read a lot of people talk about changing their rear ends in trucks.
I just bought the 05 Dakota v8 4.7l CC. I'm looking at the window sticker and mine is setup as follows.
5- Speed Auto Trans
3.92 Axle Ratio
Anti-spin Differentials Axle
4.7l Magnum(R) v8 engine
2 Wheel Drive.
Club Cab
I also see people writing about i think its called non slip rear end or something like that but i'm thinking my Anti Spin sounds like it'd take care of that issues. you'd think at dodge.com you could lick on this info when selecting it as an option and having a window come up and tell about it.
Anyway so my 3.92 means that i'm a little quicker off line and not highend or otherway around?
Also the sticker says: 8 CYL. 4.7L (287 CID)
Where in the line is the 287 CID Cubic Inch Displacement vs. like the 318 engine?
I've searched 287 CID and havent had much luck in the forums.
Let me know what your suggestions and answers are please.
Thank you.

it's alright, we were all noobs at some point in time. . .except Todd, he came out of the womb as the man
anyway, the higher the number the more revs the engine has to turn to go the same distance. it gives you a better mechanical advantage for towing. My truck has 4.10's and that gives me another 2000 pounds worth of towing capabilities over the 3.73's.
anti spin, no-slip. all the same thing, just means that when one wheel starts spinning at a greater rate than the other the diff will begin to "lock-up" and move power from the wheel that is slipping to the one that is not.
the 4.7L replaced the old and trusted 318 (5.2) a few years back.
hope this helps a bit

Hi Drew thanks for stopping by.
So is my 3.92 a good one or pretty basic?
I probably wont be doing much towing but when i do it'll more then likly be the largest U-Haul trailer they have in stock moving to another state maybe.
Hows the 3.92 as far as performance, Racing and stuff?
Does my 4.7l 287 CID have as much power, ***** as the old 318?
Just so i understand this, is my 287 CID = to a 318 CID?
I read that the `05 4.7l engines were 3-4% better on gas then the old 4.7l but they never said what CID the other/old 4.7l was do you know?
Thank you again.
If someone happens to read this before Drew please feel free to jump in anytime.

the 4.7(287) is smaller in displacement than the 5.2(318). however in terms of overall power, it has just as much. infact ive seen quite a few people tow some heavy stuff with the 4.7 and get away with it.
the largest u-haul trailer is a 8x12. Ive used my little yoda to pull one around fully loaded. I was prolly a few hundred over max vehicle weight, but the 4 banger that is in it did a good job. it would have been better to have a 6. however the 4.7 v8 will have no problems pulling it around.
now, since your running 3.92's those are the highest gears you can get stock. there is a smaller stock size, but I cant remember what it is off the top of my head. so basicaly, if you were lined up with a truck exactly like yours but the only difference is the rear axel diff. you would be making more power to the wheels for any given speed since your turning more engine RPM's and the more RPM's you turn the more hp you create. with your 3.92's you have more mechanical advantage to get your truck moving. so while you do have better acceleration, the other would have a higher top end speed.
as far as actual numbers between the 4.7L and the 5.2L I dont have them infront of me. but just make sure when yu compare engines that you compare them on the same platform. compareing a Dakota to a Ram will give you different numbers.

Drew, thank you a lot for your help.
Yeah that helps put things in to a better perspective.
Man i cant wait for the after-market items to come rolling in. it's tough doing a search and only finding mods up to years `03 or `04.
My ST model doesnt have the front Fog Lights, i'd love to get me a set and have them factory installed.
Oh well.. time will come soon enough.
TY again.

The gears you have, stock, are the best IMO. You actually don't loose a thing to a higher geared vehicle because we are all limited to a fixed MPH.
So if you have a Hemi and a 3.55 rear what then.Is this good, bad or what. With 17 inch tires.

Sure it's good. You give up a little low-end pick-up to the same truck with the 3.91 gear, but the difference really isn't that great, but is noticable.
