Default flow master effect on emissions

Hello All

First timer with a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 4.7L 4x4. I am looking into installing tuned headers, High flow Cat and a Flow Master Dynaflow muffler.

Ahh almost forgot, I do want to install the drop in version of the K&N air filter to help the engine's intake.

My county now requires emissions testing, If I do the above, will it effect the testing? Or do I have to consider the O2 sensors more/less of them in order to pass it?

emmission laws vary from state to state, county to county. where do you live?

Thanks for the replies

I live in Pennsylvania, York County. I hope the restrictions are not too hard to follow.

I hate to take a good truck and restirct its power and sound.

I talked to a couple of local Mech. and they told me the muffler would not do much to the test, except if they measure the noise level. However on the High flow Cat they were not so sure.

I would think the tuned headers will not change things on the emissions.

You should be ok, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm not sure about Dodge, but I know that with my mustang, when I went to an o/r pipe (no cats), I had to install MIL eliminators. They probably make something similar for Dodge, but again not sure. What the MIL does is fools the computer into thinking that there is actually a cat there. I would try this route. Even if they do a visual inspection to make sure you are running cats, you should be fine because you will have them. I know down here in Texas as long as you aren't throwing any codes, you're good. They only do visual inspection if you are throwing codes. Good luck.

As long as it's a good cat you should be fine no matter what they throw at you. I've seen old muscle cars that have been well tuned that can pass California emissions and that is without any cat at all. Make sure you do a tune up to it right before you get it E checked as well, it will help out.[sm=smiley2.gif][sm=smiley20.gif]

Thanks to all who replied!

Since the new emissions came out, event the Hot Rodders have not had the emissions done yet on their cars yet! Maybe I should wait a little to see.

Not sure I understand what the MIL will do for me since I do plan on having a CAT. I know when I do install the new system, I will have to make sure the O2 sensors get migrated as well.

I seem to remember that the computer uses the O2 sensor off of the Y pipe to help determin optimum shift. CHevy and Ford for sure not sure on Dodge.

I was just saying that you may need mils since you will be going to a high-flow cat. I know some mustangs that have gone to a high-flow catted midpipe and have needed mils. Just a suggestion.

if you live in bucks county, much like my county in pittsburgh, you will fail based strictly on the visual if you have no cat. if you dont rerun the O2s....you will fail because the computer wil constantly be hunting for a code, thus failing you on ODB2.

OBD2 is the devil, and pennsylvania sucks. my advise, make the exhaust Look like it should pass emmissions. then go have it tested. if it fails, find an exemption station, and buy an exemption. F pensylvania, and their stupid *** testing. my mirada gets 8 mpg, and has stickers on it...
