I forgot to mention that the distributer housing was good and tight when all of this happened. I have since loosened it up to turn it a bit when trying to start, especially to see if the chain had jumped a tooth or two. I was able to eliminate the backfire while doing that, when I had moved all of the wires around the cap over one spot. I thought this might get the rotor close enough to #1 to actually start. It seemed to actually be trying to fire, at least for awhile. I had even tried moving all of the wires over two spots. At this point, I don't even see the point in putting on the new chain, and closing up the engine.
