Default Gas mileage

I have a new 2005 Neon SXT with automatic transmission and I'm averaging 24 MPG. I was expecting 30 MPG. I came here to find out what others are getting. Of all the posts I've read on the subject so far most of them seem to be teenagers who can't convey an idea in text. They say how many miles they're going before filling-up, but they're not stating how many gallons they're putting in. Instead they're giving useless info like how low they let the tank get before filling-up. Apparently they never learned how to divide. Let me help you guys out. Each time you fill your tank, fill it until it won't take any more and reset your trip odometer each time you fill. When you fill-up again, divide the trip odometer reading by the gallons on the pump. PLEASE GIMME SOME USEFUL INFO, PEOPLE!

PS, otherwise I love the car!

Regards,

Bill

If you have a NEW car, the first thing I would do is check the tire pressure. I've NEVER bought a new car that had the correct tire pressure off of the dealer's lot. Also, new engines usually get better MPG after some miles get put on the engine. You may want to run synthetic oil as well, it'll mean less friction in the engine and better mpg.....

LOL, someone please give Bill an MPG for their year Neon SXT.

I do the same as you, Bill, with resetting the trip odometer and doing the math for MPG. Great way to keep tabs on the engine.

Thanks for the reply. Did you notice what nikoman01 posted after I admonished the group for not providing useful info? He stated that he got 20mpg with his '03 for the first 17,000 miles, but DIDN'T STATE WHAT IT WAS AFTERWARD! Must have exceeded his attention span... is the bud THAT GOOD?

Bill

Holy crap, how do you people drive ur Neons? I got an 03 SXT and I average about 34mpg. I have a K&N intake on it tho. But even before the intake I was averaging 30mpg... and I am not very light on the gas. I get about 40mpg on the highway. If I drive all on the highway I can get about 450 miles on my tank. Maybe I just have a freak car. I dunno.

I don't beat my car at all. I'm not one who goes from the gas to the brakes without coasting some. I've never given it more than half the pedal. I just drive to and from work, to the store, and the occasional weekend jaunt. No traffic jams where I live, either. I was expecting mileage close to what you're reporting. I had the dealer reset the computer so it would re-learn the sensors' data and now the mileage is 25! Whoopie freakin' doo!

Man, you need to settle your *** down! He's just trying to help you out. Belive it or not, there are some people out there who don't know to check some of the things the rest of us would deem obvious. You need to put your condesending attitude on the chill. That said...

When my 2005 Neon SXT with an automatic was brand new, I would get about 20-23MPG. Once I got it to 8K, it was getting 28MPG cosistently, and has been doing so ever since. I have 11k on it now, and the mileage has not come up any further. I live 30 miles from work, so the miles I drive are almost all highway at 65MPH speed limit. I have a friend who has a car almost identical to mine and he gets 30-32MPG with less miles on his car than I have, but his is a manual trans too. I guess the auto tranny sucks up a bit.
