It stops you from stalling in your automatic. (when you come to a stop)
cuts power to driveshaft/transaxel.
A high power one would last longer in a high power car.(less slip more grip)
It would take longer to burn it out.

someone had told me that it essentially adds more power to the rear wheels. they rate the Hemi at 345 hp and like 375 ft lbs at the flywheel. will the drivetrain loss be less with a torque converter?

That depends on the specs of the converter. (60hp festiva- 1200hp pro-street car)
If its made for stock typ setup, it would lag on a high power car/truck and burn out much faster.
so yes, under the right conditions it will rob you of some power.

It's like slipping the clutch automatically. They will allow it to slip up to a specific RPM at which point it applies total power through the transmission. A 2,500 RPM stall converter will slip some up to this point and from this point on it will lock up applying full power through it.
