Can a short in a wire blow out a relay?
I just replaced my cooling fan relay because my cooling fan would not turn on, after I put it in I started it and let it run, the fans turned on for less than a minute then turned off and havent turned back on since.
I have a 90 Grand Caravan if it helps.
One more thing, I have a stripped bolt on my ignition coil, is there any way to get it out? I want to check my coolant temp sensor and possibly my thermostat, but the coil is in the way! lol
P.S I jumped the wires again just to make sure and the fans come on, I'd keep them jumped with the wire like my last car, but in the van they stay on even with the keys out of the ignition! lol

A short in a wire can burn out a relay and moreso if the relay is solid state. You need to check to see if you are getting 12 volts to the relays coil. Jumping the contacts isnt showing that the contacts are definitely bad. The CPU may not be calling for the fan because its not getting the input from the temperature sensor to do so.
If you are getting 12 volts to the coil of the relay then that relays contacts are bad. They usually dont immediately go bad though on a contact relay, the problem would progressively get worse over time. If it is solid state this problem would make more sense as SS devices dont have moving parts and when they go, its usually immediate.
The ignition coil being stripped sounds like youll need a replacement, if you have a heavy duty pair of diagnal side cutters you can cut the bolt off or cut the wire and rewire the new one in.
Hope this helps!
