Try tweaking your throttle body,
sometimes you can tighten the cable from the pedal SLIGHTLY!!

What kind of car and year? whats the scenario? Did it all of a sudden die on you? Does it run if you give it gas but just not idle?

Then i don't recommend trying it
it is posible you burn't it up
I don't know if the 97 have in-tank pumps or not
it is possible, it sounds like it would be a last ditch effort before asking a mech.

(EDIT) yes it does have an in-tank, You should take it to a shop, they are not easy to replace

I just helped my dad replace his fuel pump on his town and country and its in the gas tank and it wasnt THAT difficult.

You might make sure that the fittings for the fuel filter arent cracked or leaking. also check and make sure you got a big enough fuel filter.

you are gonna have to drop the tank. you would be amazed at whats in your tank, give it a good cleaning and change the filter on the fuel pump. when you turn your key you will hear pump turn on. dont start vechicle. keep turning key on and off with out start ing vechicle this will prime system .after 10 cycles try and fire engine should run ruff until all air is out of system. if it still dies check fuel rails might have some sediment in lines
