Default overheating engine??

We just bought a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 4X4 Diesel, Cummings 24 valve with 53,000 miles. The truck has been well cared for.
We tow a 23 foot lite trailer. While towing the trailer uphill the truck got hot (not boiling over), but "check engine" light was blinking on and gauge was about 230 degrees. So we pulled over and let it cool down. It has done that a few times. Now with out towing I notice that the temps rises about 30 degrees driving up the hill (about one mile). I know this can't be normal. We are new to diesel engines. Does anyone know what could be the problem? Thanks in advance...
