Default Odometer doesn't work on 91 Ram 150

The odometer doesn't work on my 91 Ram 150.

Also, the gearshift lever is off by 1 "notch" - when it's in park, it's actually in reverse, neutral is in gear etc.

I'm looking for any information on where to start digging - common trouble areas etc. This is my beater work truck that gets used infrequently, so it's not been a huge problem, just something small I'm looking to fix.

Odometer: does your speedometer work?

As far as the gear indicator:
Remove the steering wheel cover (there are parts on top and bottom rear of the steering wheel). Than, you may beable to see the string. It will be runnning approximatly from the bottom of the gearshift indicator to the left (driver-side) of the steering colum (opposite the actual shifter). You may have to remove the bezel, or, you might just have to tighten up the string.
Sorry I can't provide better pics, but if you need more help, I can certainly go snap some.
