Default 1998 Dodge Carvan 3.0 V6

My wife was driving our van the other day when it justdied and would not start back up. So I borrowed my friends DRB scann tool and it came back with error code P0340 for that code the haynes manual stats that the code means No Cam Signal at PCM which means No camshaft signal detected during engine cranking. Now I was told the camshaft sensor was bad and I had to replace the whole distributor since the sensor was built in and that is what I did and the van still will not start. So I am now confused since that was the only problem with it. What I would like to know is the camshaft sensor really built into the distributor or not and if it isnt how hard is it to replace it and how much?
