hmm, weird! I have a 97 5.2 4x4, which are the very same under the hood and throughout... I had that happen to me for a week straight, I had to crank it a few times to start it, turned out to be my fuel pump ( engine wasnt gettin gas to it! ) but other than checkin the fuel pump which often goes on our year rams, I have no idea, post when you have figured it out though, Im interested in case it ever happens to me!

You need to check your fuel pressure during cold cranking. you probably need a fuel pump
TSB# 18-35-97 is a PCM flash that makes it run better cold

You could go that route or try a regulator assy, much cheaper and easier to chage.

Replacing the regulator is only a bandaid In my opinion.. Just go straight to the source and fix the core problem... If not, down the road you will wish you had

The regulator is usually what fails-it is also the fuel filter(shhh don't tell, most people dont know).
