I have an '04 neon and I am wondering something about intakes. I keep hearing about getting a cold air intake and am wondering what effects it will have on my car. Will it effect the engine sound? will it effect the gas mileage (i really need to keep what i have in mileage). while looking up systems i keep seeing these that come with a big tank for the intake, is it the same with all cold air intakes, or just some of them?

 

If you are going to put a cold air intake on you Neon, go with AEM. It will make it louder, but you can only really hear it when you floor it. Your gas mileage will actually improve.

 

and you will get a decent increase in hp, and thats always a good thing.

 

so the overall effect of the intake is good huh. whats the diff between a cold air intake and just an aftermarket air intake? and where could i find one for a 04 neon? all i see is up to 03</P>

 

Cold air intakes(CAI) get cooler air from outside the engine compartment, whereas the regular aftermarket, or short ram, get hotter air from the engine compartment but are less restrictive than the factory. Both are improvements over stock, but cold air intakes are far better than short ram intakes. The only drawback to the CAI is that they usually draw in air from below the car making them dangerous for traveling through high water, if the filter gets submerged the engine sucks up the water and the engine is screwed.

 

hmm...what affect would drivin ina heavy downpour have on an intake? what could i do to keep water out of my intake.

 

Rain has no effect, standing water does such as flooded roads or really deep puddles/pools of water.
Solutions:
1.Turn around and find an alternate route to where ever your going.
2.AEM makes a bypass valve that you can install higher up on your intake tube. This requires you to cut a section out of your intake tube. They also state in the instructions that installing this could hinder your performance.

so, water isnt that big of a problem then? just avoid massive puddles and try not to forge a river then huh. how mig of a puddle does it take to screw things up?i live in the country and just about every road holds some water.

 

As long as the water isn't deep enough to cover up most or all of the air filter at any given time then your ok, but if it does your gonna need a new engine or at least an engine rebuild and a good pair of walking shoes. <img border="0" src=smileys/smiley36.gif border="0">

 

oversplash from a puddle an inch or so deep wont hurt it too much then? i mean, i didnt think that much water could splash up into the engine compartment. if i get a short ram intake would i have to worry as much about the water problem?</P>
