Default 4 cyl. or 6 cyl.?

Been shopping for a jeep wrangler for a little while now and I just want to make sure I get something I will be happy with. So the million dollar question is "4 cyl. or 6 cyl."? What I want to do with the jeep is put on a small lift, 31" times and drive it mostly on the road, use it as an everyday driver and also take the family out with the top down.

Thanks, Ike

Stick to the 6 cyl. For everything else but interstate running, the 4cyl does have plenty of oomph at lower rpms.Honestly, my '00 sport's 4.0 isnt really enough with 32 x 11.50s on it. A Wrangler needs at least a small V-8 plain and simple. That being said...

I had a '95 Rio Grande with 31's on it and yeah it would climb anything in front of it, it could zip around town pretty good but out on the open road there better not be a head wind. Also the main consideration is that it puked up 5th gear at 90K miles. When I went to the local 4x4 shop, they had the trannys from both a 4 cyl and a 6 cyl side by side, and the 6 cyl model was half again bigger than the 4cyl box. They said the problem wasnt epidemic or anything but that the same thing happens enough that its obvious the tranny is a mini-truck piece and had no business in a Wrangler. Jeep has a habit of using lighter parts on lesser vehicles so thats something to keep in mind.

My cherokee got 32" on it and I hate it when I have to go on the highway with it. Any hill or strong wind you slow down. Mines got a 4.0 auto but not high output.

I am very happy with my 4 cyl Jeep Wrangler. But i do not use it as a daily driver, do not use it on interstates. It is a third car for us. If it was a daily driver, i would get the six, and it would be the unlimited version.

i have a 92 wrangler 4.0 lifted 4 inches, and the motor isnt enough to push it around with 31's... you have to re-gear it. mine was stock with 3.08's and i changed it to 3.77's.
