Did this mechanic rip me off ?
Hey guys, i have a 1998 Grand Cherokee with the 5.9 V8 and i bought it 2 months ago. I brought it to the Jeep Dealership to get checked out for a vibration i was fealing and he gave me a list of things that needed fixed. Tires needed balenced, the top bolt on the drivers side brake caliper was stripped and kept on turning and wouldnt tighten. And a few other things. I had the tires balenced like he said, he claims 2 needed re-balencing but i dont feal a diff in the vibration so im wondering if they actually did need rebalencing or not.. He did put them in that machine and hammerd the wheels with something when i was watching but i dunno
Well when i came home i checked that bolt myself and it was like 1 inch out of the thread so i tightend it with my hand and it wouldnt tighten anymore by hand.. However i know thats not a real good test to see if it keeps turning cause sometimes bolt still have thread and wont tighten by hand anymoreb ut keep turning when you use a socket..
I brought it in and paid them $50 to fix the stripped bolt. He said he re-threaded it to the next size bolt. I checked the bolt when i got home and it looks like the same exact bolt as the bottom caliper the size didnt change. So this to me sounds like he loosend the caliper bolt to make it seem like it was loose, and then claimed he fixed it.
This same mechanic changed my rear differential oil with the mopar synthetic stuff on my limited slip dana 44A. I took off the fill plug and checked to make sure and he did chnage it because the oil was clear and before it was like orange/brown. Im just wondering tho, do you think he lied about the caliper bolt and ripped me off of $50, or do you think he just re-threaded it like he said and used the same bolt? he did say he threaded it to the next size bolt tho... however the bolt is the same one

First of all...congratulations on the Jeep. I have had my 5.9 Limited for ten years. I simply love it! It has 163,000 miles on it.
As far as the bolt goes...I am guessing that the only way to find out if it was truly changed, or not, is to remove the new bolt and one of the old ones and compare.
