Steering column help?
My dad has a 1988 jeep cherokee sport 2dr it has a tilt column and a floor shifter ...I am looking for a new column for this because we had someone install an ignition switch and they messed up the whole column ,broke the plastic around the igintion clyinder what a mess...Now the horn doesnt work ,blinkers,no high beams...it starts runs just cant go far without a horn or turn signals ...So i came up with a bright i dea to replace the whole column..what years will fit this, plus do i need a manual trans column or what??? Also where's the best place to look for one...Thanks in advance.....
If my memory serves exactly right for an '88 you should be good from '84-'90 from any cherokee (all were floor shifted except the police/government package), also any manual trans and some auto trans '86-90 Comanche. Of course the tilt will be a little rarer than the non-tilt but I've seen lots with it (three in my driveway), I think you could use the non-tilt if you needed to. Also if you have intermitent wipers try to find one with the right switch cause they're no fun to swap. The entire column is chev sourced and I think you can also use the chevy columns but I'm not sure exactly which models and if it's 100% bolt-in/plug-in. If you're junkyard hunting any Cherokee Limited or Wagoneer of the above years would have a tilt/intermitent column, fairly common on Sports and Laredos, not likely on Pioneers.
BTW I don't know where you're located but if you're willing to give up the tilt, I've got a couple spare columns. I think both are also non-intermitent but that can be changed, just a bit of a hassle. Cost of shipping, Tan or Burgundy. I only need one spare. PM if interested

Any year xj from 88' to 96' will work. They're all the old body style same deal basically. And what he said is basically right. Try and go to a pick n' pull and find an older cherokee. they're everywhere.
