All new Jeep GC's are AWD.

hey buddy i kind of own a 2005 jeep grand cherokee and it is 4 wheel dirve not all wheel drive. there has never been an AWD jeep grand cherokee. they have all been 4 wheel drive. i no for a fact cuz there is one in my driveway that all new jeep grand cherokees are not AWD
First off, when I read your original question 'why awd?' I interepreted it as 'why isn't it just rwd' since it is meant to be a performance vehicle. You didn't specify that your conflict was 4wd vs awd.

Ok, let's move on to modern vehicles now. The terminology of AWD and 4WD are blended. They are essentially the same thing. In the past, you had 4WD allowing manually selecting hi/lo, etc. Now, electronics do that automatically as needed. Yes, some vehicles still ALSO have a manual selector for that. Guess what, many new AWD vehicles also have that manual selector. Even the manufacturers now toss around either term and mean the same thing. Some websites will say AWD and another will say 4WD for the same vehicle. The debate over 'what is the difference between 4wd and awd' is old, tired, and no longer accurate. Look back at Redriders post, and you'll see he says AWD, yet the MSRP sticker says 4wd. It takes more to make a vehicle an 'offroader' than just sticking a 4wd label on it. It is suspension, and gearing that makes the vehicle a true offroader as opposed to just a 4wd.

teh difference between all wheel drive and 4wd is taht 4wd has all for tires spinning at teh same rate under all condition.

awd is it gives power any of teh 4 tires taht are slipping. awd means that the power is given were needed. 4wd is it is everywhere at teh same tiem always in 4wd. ive never heard or seen a car with awd that has a switch has anyone else? only 4wd have switches. read this: http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/e...?act=feature06

I've seen that at least some of the European spec vehicles that are AWD now have the manual selector. They are supposed to be making their way to North America within a model year or two.
Do any 4wd vehicles have electronic traction control systems? I guess that depends on if the manufacturer's claim of a 4wd vehicle meets your idea of a 4wd vehicle. Because if they do, then they are no longer 4wd by your definition. Traction control systems are also a technology that is becoming much more mainstream, and again further blends awd and 4wd into an exchangable term.

the difference between awd and traction control is that traction control plays with the brakes to control the car, while teh awd system controls power distributation. im american i wont believe the switch thign until i see one myself. scerw europe they shoudl bow down to america and "King George"

I think they were confused between AWD and 4 WD.
