Default Difference between the 2.2 and 2.5

Anyone know the real difference between the 2.2 and 2.5? I just found out after having my car nearly a year now that its only a 2.2 when i thought it was a 2.5 (found out thru carfax.com report). Also think this is the reason the motor i did a bottom end rebuild on thru a rod, I was told it was a 2.5L when its a 2.2 so I put 2.5L parts in it (rings, one piston, rod bearings, head bolts/gasket, pan gasket). Not sure what all is diff about them so If anyone knows please lemme know.

Bassboy, In 1989 dodge went to what they call a common block . They use the same engine block for a 2.2 and 2.5. the only differance is the stroke of the crank and the pistons ( pin hight ). the rods should be the same length. So as of 1989 and up a 2.5 is just a stroked 2.2. Hope this helps.

Aight thx, just tryin to figure out if this might be what caused my 2.2L motor to throw a rod. I used all 2.5L parts (under the infuence that it was a 2.5L), This a possibility that using a 2.5L piston, rings, and rod bearings would have caused it? **On a side note, I got the rest of the motor i was after from the junkyard (bottom half) pulled the oil pan after getting it on the stand and it has a big aluminum thing between the crank and where the oil pump filter is, it has a chain on it which connects to the crank..what exactly is it? The 2.2L i had didnt have it so I was just wondering wtf it is lmao.

I think your problem was useing the 2.5 pistons with the 2.2 crank. The hight of the wrist pin in the piston is different. the bearings should be the same. But allways check your clearence.

Well the 2.2L that came outa the car (91 Shadow) has a whole in the block and #4 cylinder wall, Im thinking about dropping the 2.5L in it...But at the same time my 93 Shadow is starting to knock a bit so Im thinking about rebuilding the 2.5L and dropping it into my 93. Then Rebuild the 2.2L and drop it in the 91. Not sure if thats the route Im going to go yet knowing what I know now, The plan was to rebuild the motor and drop it in the 91 so that my fiance has a car to drive during the winter (We dont wanna drive the 91 Shadow Convertable during the winter). Plans may change, who knows.

Ok first off the diffs between the 2.2 and 2.5l is minut. the crank in the 2.5 is heavier and larger, the bores are the same, the pistions are not. the wrist pins are higher in the 2.2l. The balnce shafts are in the 2.5l only..
you have to think of a few things to change engines everything is the same but the fuel systems.. pick up a haynes manual and you will see or check out allpar.com or donovan dodge garage. they lay it out pretty good.

Donavan's Dodge Garage is great. Alot of useful stuff on there. Shame he doesn't update it more often... (like most FWD Mopar sites that DON'T cover the SRT-4)

Is it possible to run the engine without the balance shafts? I beilieve that people do this with the Mitsu 4G63 to reduce parasitic HP loss, should be good for a few HP.

I belive so, i remember reading on some site that a guy did pull out his balance shafts in his 2.5l motor. I'm gonna start looking into it soon when I get ready to rebuild my 2.5L motor.
