K&N Filter
I just put a K&N Filter in my shadow and i have to say that i am impressed. Since it is pretty cold up here in WI, my Dad told me to take my RAM AIR off. So i lost some performance. I was running a FRAM filter and it worked fine. But since i put the K&N in it is like i have the RAM AIR back on. It feels great. I suggest that anyone buy one of these. I just cant wait until summer rolls around so I can put the RAM AIR back on.
I liked my K&N I put in my Horizon enough to put the nice decal they sent me for free on my window.
I noticed a boost in acceleration and slightly better gas mileage. I've been wondering how they stack up against Green filters and the Fram Air Hog filters.
I'd like to see a nonbiased side-by-side comparison done.

Yea this board is pretty dead.
Ok, airfilters-
First you shouldn't have to remove your ram intake for the winter, it just wont' be a problem.
Second- cone airfilters are all the same performance wise, the difference in brand is usually a bigger factor in how well they hold up "down the line"- when new they all perform about the same. The idea behind K&N is that its cotton and thus you clean and reoil it every so often (6 months is ideal), if you don't re oil it often enough, it will dry out and you'll get these huge holes in the filter element!
The cheap cone filter knock offs like APC stink reliability wise. They perform well when new, but dont expect more than a couple years out of them before they need to be thrown out- they just don't hold up. And forget about customer support. APC will tell you to go away when your airfilter goes to hell.
The OEM spec k&ns are meaningless. No performance difference, and paper filters are so cheap its not going to save you any money by not having to replace the filter for a new paper one regularly.
When you order a K&N or buy one, what you are looking for is a cone filter that meets your size requirements. Thats all, no big deal.

I never take my cold air intake off during the winter, though this is the first winter I have had it I see no reason to take it off. Car warms up just fine. If I'm not mistaken you have a STOCK air box, in which case it sucks in warm air from the exaust manifold until the car is warmed up? My car has a very small air box, just bigger than the throttle body and thats it. It warms up just as fast, if not faster than my fiances 2.5L with a stock airbox. Asfor filters, I use cheap APC cone filters they dont hold up as well as k&n but you dont really have to do any maintence to them.
