Welcome to the site. Congrats on your car/truck that is a hard find you have there. It depends if the motor is carbed or fuel injected. But regardless of what motor it has you can always work on making it breath better. In and Out. Put a higher flowing exhaust on it, put a higher flowing air filter on it. There are many others but i cant list them all. Hopefully our other members have some ideas for you......(enter 89Daytona and speedyshelby)

Are you just trying to make it faster or are you trying to make it handle better also?
What is your "cheap" price range?

Performance plugs and wires (basic tune up stuff to get a good starting point)

Cylinder head swap (not exactly easy, but well worth it and can be done fairly in expensively) http://home.comcast.net/~ozspeed/CylinderHead.htm

Turboing the engine is usually a good choice (but can get expensive)

RWD conversion https://dodgeforum.com/m_583185/tm.htm

It really depends on what he put in it for an engine. Turboing is a very fun way to go in a L body car I should know I got a shelby charger. L bodies are omni, charger, and rampages. There the lightest of the cars from the 80's that came or easly to turbo.

the engine has a throttle body... im trying to make it faster, it seems to handle pretty good already. i have got a new cam, and a new set of lifters and rollers from a friend for free!! as for price range ill prolly pay up to $300 on single parts, maybe more if the part is really worth it.

Just let you know that if you look around and watch the J yards. You could get a turbo motor setup to put in rampage for pretty cheap. If has a trottle body then part of the conversion to get carb car turbo been done. Like the gas tank and lines from an efi car.
