Default 85 Dodge Aires - Total Loss of Power

I have an 85 Dodge Aires with approx 55,000 miles on it. Lately the engine has been just dieing while I am driving down the road. When it dies, I dont see any of the idiot lights come on. After I sit on the side of the road for a few minutes it will start back up. I also does not idle correctly, sometimes it will idle real slow and miss a little, other times it will idle real fast making it hard to drop into gear (hard on the trans!!). I have replaced the pick-up coil in the distributor, the throttle body injector and the fuel pressure regulator. The spark plugs have been replaced receintly also. The car is a low milage car that was owned by my grandparents and it does not burn any oil (yet!). The engine is the 2.2 L 4 cylinder.

Any thoughts or ideas would be helpful, Thanks

Hey, that sounds almost exactly like my problem except I have an automatic 86 dodge 600. I replaced the PCM and that didn't do anything except help deliver fault codes of 14 and 27... I have yet to find out what those mean. They think it could be the coil... they think it could be the fuel pump... this is going to cost major bucks if I don't get this figured out soon. This did all start after I did my own tune up, so maybe that's something to think on... Cause you speak of recently replaced spark plugs. When I get some answers I will definately try to help you out.

I love my car but she's such a brat lately...

Years ago my Dad did his own tune up and failed to gap the plugs and had a similar problem. Did you set the gap?

Well after towing the car to the dodge dealer and $350 later the car runs great. It turns out that the distributor was slowly tearing its self apart. There was metal everywhere inside. So I now have a new distirbutor. The dealer didn't get the timing set back right so now it knocks when you put your foot in it, but at least its not dying any more!! I'll get the timing change and it should fix the knocking.

Yea, the gap for mine is .35
I did have the timing screwed up for a while but that was fixed. I just took it back to the auto shop and told them to check out the MAP sensor and the PCM they just installed. 14 stood for MAP sensor circuit and 27 stood for Logic module circuit. Hopefully it'll fix the problem. Thank you though.

Yea, car's fixed now. 1,000 dollars later... Total items replace: 4. PCM, Logic Module, EGR valve, MAP sensor. It makes me sad and happy at the same time. Now my tire is warped or something weird. Ehh, I get it checked out tomorrow by my teacher so meh. Laters!
