Magnum SRT-8 That thing got a Hemi? Indeed, a 6.1L Hemi that is. The Dodge Magnum SRT-8 is the most extreme factory wagon.

Question 2005 RT high mileage- any recommendations

Never had one. The one I'm looking at has 164,000 miles. Well maintained. Has had water pump replaced and struts. Have not see it, but pics look clean. Owner is a car mechanic. It's his wife's car. They are moving cross country so selling sone of their cars. I will ask about the rotors. Read they had probllems. Paint is in great shape. Anything I should check?
Am I getting in over my head. I won't be using it much. Will be a third vehicle for comfort rides.

Run a carfax and ask for maintenance history.

if the rotors are bad...you will have brake shake when braking hard from highway speed. brakes are cheap...engine and transmissions are expensive.

pay 1 hour labour and have an independent mechanic tell you what it needs. there is only so much you tell tell from a test drive. it needs to be up in the air on a hoist. professional inspection will be the best $120 you spend.

No such animal as a 2005 SRT Magnum. Only LX based SRT car in 2005 was the 300. SRT Magnum was only 06-08. Never seen brake issues on any of those cars, at the R/T or SRT level. That engine and trans are more than capable of going well beyond the 200,000 mark if maintained. Just FYI, you may want to use it as a comfort vehicle and it will be fun, but mileage will be horrible lol. Weak spot in these cars were the axles. Rear diff is open, uses the brakes and traction control to limit wheelspin (not all that well). Axles tended to snap on them, even on stock vehicles (mine did right before the hub).

My mistake. Its a RT. Thanks for all the info. Hadn't heard about the axel issue. Test ride is today.
Car fax 1 minor accident rear fender. He's already replaced the water pump and struts about year ago.

That changes things then lol
Not really an axle issue on the R/T's, just same open rear. Much better mileage since the 5.7 has MDS. They're fun cars and very handy. If it has the OEM wheels it'll have 18x7.5's with small tires (for a 4100+lb vehicle). Any later 18x7.5 or 20x8 rim will fit. 20x8 is a quick and easy upgrade that will help with better handling. SRT struts/springs/shocks as well as either SRT sway bars or the police sway bars those years (cop bars are bigger) are also a nice minimal work factory upgrade. If you can find a later Hellcat front bar that someone doesn't want a body part for they're the biggest factory bars. All kinds of aftermarket options as well.

The vehicle was pretty clean. It doesn't have a dipstick for trans. So what does that "tool cost"? I couldn't look at or smell trans fluid. The AC fan works, but they said they forgot to get it recharged. Assuming the worst, the compressor cost.??? Full leather. The guy said he had struts replaced but I couldn't tell. Steering was tight didn't pull either way.
Still worried about transmission with 154,000. Wanted $5k. Maybe I could get for $3500. The other bummer is it won't fit in my garage. It would sit out in full sun in my driveway. Would have to get a cover.

Any additional recomendations?

nag1 trans...you need a dealer dipstick specialty tool and a scan tool to check the fluid level.
if you are not going to have a professional look at it. I would get a scan tool that can check the I/M monitors. if someone has cleared codes without fixing a problem the monitors will show incomplete status.

That's the weirdest thing I ever heard. I got to have a tool and a scanner? What BS is that? So basically I have to take to dealer to see if Tran fluid is ok?
