CAI & related mods
I own a stock '03 SRT-4 and would like to put some mods on it. what is the order in which i should proceed? I'm planning on getting K&N CAI, but i was wondering what mods to install with it? which ones are needed, i read something about an OCC, but i don't have one now. I take it i should install one/two of them, are there any detailed directions on how to do it, and what are the proper supplys needed? thanks for any help.
Seems like we cover the OCC thing at least once a week, I never thought it would become so popular!!!! At any rate, there are literally dozens of OCC subject threads to pick from in this section. Just flip back a page or two and you should be able to find all you need. You'll find part #'s and the install directions. Any problems, just ask.
A K&N CAI is a good mod, but I'd replace those stock spark plug wires with a set of MSD's first. Otherwise, you won't realize the full potential of your more expensive mods later on due to the heat damage, especially to the #4 wire. If you want to go the cheap route, www.modernperformance.com sells a heat shield for the wires and the coil pack for $19.95, less than half the cost of the MSD's. You can get either one, or both at their website. A cheaper version of the CAI is just putting in a K&N or Mopar Performance air filter, about $45 for either one.
I did two other things which made a major difference in performance, a Mopar/Borla exhaust and Mopar Stage one upgrade. Both can be installed by the owner and will run less than $700 combined. You can go with Stage 2 if you have deeper pockets and are willing to spend more time on the install, especially with the "with toys" version. People I have heard from are waiting at least 8 weeks to get theirs from the dealer, so it won't be something you'll be putting on your car next weekend.
Good luck!!!

thanks for the info, i will look back to find the OCC info. i take it the cheaper version of the K&N CAI is less
performance gained?, so if i what the most performance got the whole CAI package?
and what about handling? i'm more into rally type driveing, street, non dirt. the strut bar for under the
hood would be a good choice? i will get some pics when i can, thanks very much

There's not a big difference between the CAI and the K&N filter. As hot as the engine compartment gets, you're not getting "cold" air in there anyway, unless you're running in the dead of winter in Montana. The pipe that leads from the filter is going to get just as hot as everthing else in there unless you take the extra step of putting insulation around it...even then, it's only partly effective. Summit Racing has some of those insulation kits as well as one for just the turbo as well.
A front and rear STB are worth the $$$. Once agian, check www.modernperformance.com for the front STB, they have one for less than $40 that won't block the air flow to your turbo and one for the rear as well for a little more $$.

So the CAI is mostly just for flashy looks , got that, havn't found the instal direction for the OCC (only 1 is needed right?) , but still looking.
any spark plugs prefered?

This is where you will find what you need....
The stock plugs work pretty well. If you are having problems, it may be the old wires, not the plugs. You might want to check the gap though, mine were a little off.

i'm suprised more people haven't jumped on this- this is one of the few areas where dusty and i disagree. remember, the cai provides a larger diameter pipe for the air (i.e.-greater air flow), as well as a less convoluted routing for the air to travel in (i.e.- greater velocity, which again equals more air flow). also, remember that the air is moving and doesn't have time to collect alot of ambient heat, so, while i haven't done any scientific testing (i don't have time for that stuff), i'm confident that the air from a cai is cooler than from a short ram, since the underhood temps in this car are so high, and there is a large difference btn the air under the hood and the air outside- if you don't believe me open the hood and stick your hand in there, and remember that's with the hood open (granted you're not moving, but most of that air is dumped in the back of the compartment over the turbo). anyway, point being that the cooler air from the cai moves too fast to have time to heat up to the same temp as the engine compartment air. and we all know that cooler air=denser air=more oxygen=more fuel=more power (i'm having deja vu-i feel like i just talked about this a few minutes ago). if you want actual proof (and you trust modernperformance) they dynoed the stock box w/ k&n filter and a k&n cai and found the cai gave about 10 horses more. anyway, all imho.
