SRT_YA: Instead of erasing the hood, try using the feather tool. It will give a much better fade on the edges and make it look transparent rather then erased. If that is what you were using, increase the radius of it.

You can use a variety of programs, but most people use Photoshop.
Macromedia Fireworks
Adobe Photoshop - any version
Paint Shop Pro
Microsoft Paint - yes it can be done, but no I dont recommned it.
LView Pro
And those are just a few....there are others....
