speaking of oil filters....and here's a stupid question but whatever......

i've seen these magnet thingies that are supposed to attract metal particles in the oil to stay in the filter making it more effective. sounds like total bs like most of these products are, but has anyone ever tried them or seen any reviews?

ever used a magnetic drain plug? same theory. the "filtered" oil that passes over the plug or settles around it still has enough tiny metal particles in it to attach to the magnet. the only way that it makes the filter more effective is in the way the magnet catches some of what the paper filter fails to catch. i've been using a filter mag for the past year.

no kidding... huh... I'll have to do some more research on those Fram's... that sucks... I've been using them for years... DOH!

looks like Mobile 1 FTW...

Amy - I've seen those magnetic gizmo's... but... I'm not sure they are really worth it... sort of like the "Tornado" for your intake

my thinking (and again, this is just my opinion on it)... if they were necessary - wouldn't filter companies or OEM's be using them? it probably doesn't hurt anything... but... just not sure it helps...
OEM do use magnets. some select cars come from the factory with magnetic drain plugs. and if you don't believe in magnets, try draining the oil from a high performancecar that does 3k drain intervals using mobil 1 and an ac delco ultra oil filter and you'd be surprised to see what sticks to the drain plug at every oil change. btw, the car is a c5 corvette and it is not driven hard at all - the guy drives it like it was a subaru justy.

I use Fram Tough gaurds cause I'm tough and I aint skeered. I also use Purolators on occasion. I dont really play with anything else. I dont use Mopars simply because I'd have to mail order them and they are not right next to the Mobil One like the Frams are that I buy at Walmart because they have the best price on oil. It's a matter of convenience and price. All the Dodge dealers are way out of my way. Plus, I dont think Frams are really all that bad as I have used them for well over 20 years with no engine failures due to oil contaminations on all my vehicles.....ever.
If Walmart/Pep Boys/Autozone had a shelf of Mopar filters, I'd buy 'em there sure.

I've attached a link to describe what I found to be the problem with Fram filters. On a cold engine start up the valve train was noisy as hell with a Fram filter installed. This happened on my 93 Dodge Spirit, my 96 Dodge Stratus, My 1998 Intrepid, my 2000 Intrepid RT and my 2002 Neon ACR. The knocking noise was embarrassing as hell when I'd start it up and would sit there knocking / ticking for 10-15 seconds.

The noise was so bad on my wifes Mazda B3000 with a Fram we thought the engine was shot, took it to the dealer and they asked how long the Fram oil filter had been on. They said take it off, put an OEM filter onand if it still was making noise bring it back. We didn't put an OEM filter on it butchanged it to a Purolator. Changing the filtereliminated the noise completely.

I don't know if you would hear the noise on my SRT because of the deep growling exhaust noise but I 'll stick with Mobil 1's or K & N to be safe.

I would buy mail order, I would drive 40 miles but I will never buy another Fram oil filter.

tough guards are decent, but if they're even close to the price of the mobil 1 i'd take the mobil 1. it's the regular fram filter that really sucks - it's still marketed as a high quality filter, but it still chooses to use cardboard end plate and glue construction while other quality filters go with metal end plates.

I am curious as to how many of those cars you listed have a) the same filter PN and b) the 2.7 liter engine which is aknown to be a p.o.s.
Also, I hope you do not run Pennzoil or Quaker state.

As I have stated, I have run Frams for over 20 years on a whole slew of makes and models with no such problems. This is not to say that they did not have a bad run of filters. That could happen to any company.

Just put another Fram Tough Guard on today. (No bull) If my engine seizes cause of it, I'll be sure to let you know.

The same p/n ? I don't keep a diary ofoil filter part numbers for cars I don't own any more. All I know is that I was persistent in buying Fram oil filters and wondered why my valve train was making noise on cold starts in the morning, or anytime the car had been sitting 4 hours or more. I thought it was just a Dodge problem and that they all did it.

As for the 2.7 I don't know if it's a POS, it seems it is still being used by Chrysler / Dodge in their new cars now,and I never had any problem with mine other than that damned noise after I changed the oil.

The only engine I had a problem with, and would possibly refer to as a POS, was the 2.4 in my 96 Stratus. The head gaskets started leaking with about 6,000 miles onthe car and the dealer said it would probably be down 2 weeks. I traded that POS for the 2.7Intrepid sitting on the showroom floor.

Don't let me know if you have engine problems,Fram has a free 1-800 number, Phone: 800-890-2075.
