Fuel for the SRT-4

Just thought I'd add a little more info that may be of use to SRT-4 owners... the type/quality/grade of gasoline is important to your SRT-4 since lower octanes have an adverse impacton your turbo/boost (e.g. your car will go SLOWER). I worked at Southwest Research here in San Antonio Texas for about 2 years as a "test car driver" and some of the things we tested included gasoline, motor oil, tires, etc. We'd drive the cars around a 1/4 mile track for about an hour each morning and then proceed to the General Tire Company Test Track in Uvalde, Texas, about 80 miles west of San Antonio, Texas. Once there, we'd do 10 laps of the 8 mile trackwith the pedal to the metal while a computer on the passenger side floor recorded our speeds/times. Southwest Research does a lot of DOD weapons research as well, and they don't make a lot of their results public, but I DID learn a few things thru conversations with the technicians...For example, the best gasoline for keeping your engine's valves clean was Chevron (I would recommend the Premium Grade), with Texaco and Mobile right behind. Beware of local brands, they had the lowest ratings in almost every case. We tested one oil, Mobile 1 against the regular non-syn oils and it wasn't even close. Syn's are a giant leap above regular oils, period. As far as tires go, remember this was a General Tire Company Track...guess which brand did best!?!?!?

Hope this helps,

SO far I have run nothing but aviation fuel in mine. It is quite hard to come by as that it is illegal. It is phenominal. The only reason it is illegalis because there are no taxes on it. We have run them in the motorcycles forever, as well as the two race cars that my parents had. I promise that you will never, ever have to replace a set of spark plugs. This gas is completely clear, no brown coloring loke unleaded/pump gas. It runs about $2.00-$2.25 a gallon, so it isn't much more than premium...

How about deposits on valves andwould there be any damage to the cat converter??

They add coloring to the gas to show the difference between the grades of gasoline. Avaition gas has its own coloring, depending on the type...i.e. JP4, AVGAS, etc. Jet airplane fuel is mostly kerosene which has a higher ignition temp.

Dad has a 94 viper and has run nothing but av gas in it and has never changed plugs and never had one prob with the cats. As I mentioned with the race cars. Dad had a 68 roadrunner before the viper which of course did not have cats to mess up, but when he would take that engine apart every other year, it was truly shiny and spotless inside. I have been around many rat motor and other 440s that ran race gas 106 octane or better @ $5+ per gallon that were surprizingly dirty inside. I sware by it that there is nothing better, but warning, you have to put marval mystery oil in because avgas is very very dry and without that lub it will burn up the valve.

I always wondered what that "mystery oil" was good for!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the Viper isn't a daily driver. If you run a leaded fuel like that in a daily driver with catalytic converters it will plug up and destroy the catalysts. It will also coat the O2 sensor and keep it from functioning properly.
True, the viper barely every leaves the garage, and as for the lead, I don't now that... That is a very good question with the cats, all I can say is that we never had any problems. The Viper has some major cats on it. we cut them off about a year ago and put race borlas on. These cats were probably upwards of 20 pounds apeice, very heavy. There never was any problems with avgas there, but like you said, it wasn't a daily driver.

Yeah, trust me, if it didn't destroy them I'd be running it in my R/T as well. My Roadrunner gets 110 octane Cam2 leaded race fuel, but it's $4.50 a gallon. I could use 100 octane Cam2 unleaded in my R/T, but it is also $4.50 a gallon.
One other thing is that most AVGAS comes up short in the octane department compared to "racing gasoline"...
