Default new guy looking for info on reliability of srt-4

Pretty much just looking for any info about the reliability of the srt-4 after 60,000 miles or so. I'm looking to buy one and i already own a neon se and I'm curious to see if the srt-4 is as reliable as my neon. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ross

It totally depends on the previous owner(s). If the car has been well maintained by someone who knew what they were doing, it should be fine. If someone beat the crap out of it and didn't know how to take care of it or how to properly install mods, then you might want to pass on it. The car itself has no major reliability issues that can't be traced back to abuse or poor maintenance. A (near-) stock 04 is arguably your best bet.

Two complaints that pop up frequently online: third gear can be an issue (mostly caused, it seems, by slamming gears); and the MFS (multifunction switch for the lights and turn signals) connector sometimes overheats and partially melts (which may also be true of regular Neons with foglamps).

all depends on how you treat it. my buddy has one with 85k miles on it and has never had a problem with it. just keep up on the maintenance and don't beat the ***** out of it everyday and it should be pretty reliable.

+1.

Depends on the previous owner(s). All cars have thier minor issues, and the SRT is no exception, but overall, you should have no problems with any vital parts on thier own (unless someone screwed with it). The block on the SRT can handle 500hp. Tranny is good too.

Mine works fine and its been modded with no problems. Ive got about 59000 miles

Thanks guys. Hey BigMac why is an 04 srt the one i should be looking at, is the 04 model better or more reliable than the 05? I'm looking at and 04 with 52,000 miles. Not too sure if its stock, but it looks like it might have a stage 2 setup with turbo toys. What do yall think about this?

Reliability is awesome. 2004 w/65000 stage 2 and no serious issues.

Ok, I'm an older guy and a mechanic, so I know how to beat on a car without breaking it. Now that said, I do beat on my car, but, I also take care of it. I change the oil frequently and only use Mobile 1, 5w30. I change the trans fluid every year and only use full synthetic.

The only maintenance items I have done are plugs (only to try iriduims), airfilter which is a K&N washable, the tires, front brake pads and surprisingly last summer, the outer tie rod ends. I blame the early demise of the tie rod ends on the fact that I had a full 2" drop on it without a realign for a summer but have since gone back to stock and the fact that I frequently drag race and also autocross. The aftermarket ones I put on are better than stock and were not expensive.

I have a full stage 2 w/toys and a full 3" TBE. I have solid AGP mounts and 16x7 wheels with 225-55-16 tires. I have had these mods since almost new. I use the clutch when shifting, even while drag racing and have had zero trans trouble. Clutch is still stock. Plug wires, coil - stock. Car is very stock damn quick and reliable.

The car is friggin awesome. Really.

Ive got an 05 srt-4 with about 42k on it and reliability for me has been so-so. My bigges problem was stock injectors, i somehow blew 2 injectors in one wack and a low rpm cruise home from work. Another big issue i have is Axels, had one replaced within a month of me buying it, and got about 20k outta the new one before needing replacing. I have also just recently started having problems with my third gear, sligh grind going in on upshift and sometimes kicks back at me when downshifting.clutch has a slight chatter One of my pulleys makes a ton of noise. This car is not my daily driver, and is not raced or powershifted. Yes i do "beat" on it but not from a dead stop. I dont burnout or make the front end hop.do all the maintenece and never install my own mods!
