This or similar would have been one of my next questions. I have seen so many peoples cars listed as having aftermarket coils & wires I was wondering if there was a problem with the stocker. It appears by the replies here that stock is good if you're not too boosted. That makes sense. I do wonder how much power increase is too be had by upgrading the ignition on an otherwise stock engine? If nothing else, better gas mileage is always welcome.
The stock plug wires on the '03 and most '04 SRT-4's have a problem with the #4 plug wire, it comes straight out from the coil which puts it right over the turbo causing the wire to breakdown from the extreme heat. They eventually changed the #4 plug wire from a straight one to a 90 degree boot wire. This is one of the biggest reasons why everyone highly recommends replacing the plug wires with the MSD plug wires, the MSD's are hundreds of times better than the stock wires as well as being far more heat resistant and they all have a 90 degree boot on all the wires. This keeps the #4 wire away from the turbo and it's heat.
