Noob, how long does an srt4 last??
Hello all, loyal mopar guy here, drive a modded jeep as the DD, and take passes in an 11 second 72' 340ci dart at the track. Im looking to sell the jeep and replace it with an srt but i have a few questions. This decision comes after driving my buddy's mitsu evo, and now im hooked on turbo'd engines.
Im aware that these cars are rather new, and that its more than likely that most of you are still under 50k on the odometer, but how stout are the motor/tranny's in these cars? MY first thoughts are that boosting these motors is gonna typically put a lot of stress on internals, and im concerned with how long these things go, because of course the kid with the evo is convinced that these motors blow up at around 60k. [:@]
What kinda fuel mileage are you guys getting? ANythings better than the 12mpg city and 15 highway im getting in my jeep.
And being FF, traction a problem at all? I see these things at the track, and seems as if launching at anything higher than idle speed spins the tires until the 60 foot mark and creates all kindsa wheel hop...

as long as you're not stupid with mods, the engine's and trannies are just about bullet proof. notice i didn't say idiot proof. it's very easy to screw these cars up when people don't know what they're doing. i've seen some rather retarded things done and stuff broke as a result, but that's the same with any car out there. there are a few srt's with over 50k on them and no major problems are reported so far.
i love evo owners, they really think that their cars aren't just overpriced lancers. as you can guess, i'm not impressed with the evo or their mostly arrogant owners. for 27k i can do a lot more with my srt. the evo has a very nice motor, but the trannies are junk once you increase the power even a little bit. not to mention they're rediculously expensive to fix.
launching....well, it's not so easy on these cars. yea, you need to launch at about 2500rpms or less. why is that a problem? again, tell your buddy to do some 5k drops in that evo and see how well his tranny holds up. ours will hold it just fine, you'll just spin everywhere! there are ways to address the problem (solid mounts, larger tires, lca bushings, etc.) that help with the wheel hop and traction issues.
i currently get about 20-22mpg average, and that includes city and highway driving. i've never calculated them seperately.

somehow i knew youd be the first to respond. Speaking of which, i see that first pic in your cardomain site is at e-town... were you by any chance at the Mopar Atlantic Nationals this weekend?? On staruday, which was when i ran the dart, there was about 14 srt's in there own bracket class. most running in the 14's with the occasional 13 second pass out of a few, very respectable IMO. What kinda numbers has your car put up? Or are you not willing to share because you are a street entrepreneur???
oh boy the evo agian. would you really drive a car thats company also makes tvs? electronic rev limits at 5k cuz the ring and pinons cant handle high rpm launchs, clucths sucks, diff's blow out at the track and power steering that fails under hard driving.. all that and more for 30k!! what a deal. as a former owner of the 4g63 and 2 other DSMs mitsubishi pretty much sucks. i can say without a dought that that motor will have problem after 120k like all other mitsubishis as far as the srt goes the only problem ive ever had is the tps senser but mechanic wise the car is impressive for the way we (srt drivers) generaly drive. no other problems from what ive seen. keep up on the maintaince and i dont see any problems. of course there will always be that oddball srt or evo that proves otherwise but yea for the most part pretty stout. are the evos fast? sure with 20psi stock id hope so. hmm but what happens when the srt with the smaller turbo gets 20psi? or better yet when we get the td05(stage 3) 350WHP? uh huh.. that pretty much sums it up. we do more for less thats the point of the car.
The SRT-4 may be new, but Chrysler has perhaps the most experience with turbocharged engines of all auto manufacturers. I know that they use to be the most turbocharged manufacturer in the world, but that was back in the 80's when almost everything they made had turbocharged versions. As long as you drive it right, let it cool down properly when it needs and use a good synthetic oil like Mobil 1, then you should have an SRT-4 with a very long life. My '88 Daytona Shelby Z with the 2.2L Turbo II went well over 200,000+ miles before it needed major work and it was due to a wrist pin clip breaking and not the turbo. The turbo did go some time after that due to the a**clown shop that did the rebuild that resulted in overheating trouble, which I believe severly shortened the turbos life. It's still going strong today, but not with me since I sold it to help with getting the SRT-4.
On these stage kits that evreyone seems to run, whats with the turbo toys? someone please explain, a search didnt really help me much.

i don't mind telling you my times, i don't street race at all, only at the track. ok so maybe i do the occassional pull on the highway, but nothing for money or anything like that. i'm not about to risk my car to race a civic (in nyc, if you're caught street racing they take your car and sell it. so not worth it to me). i do not have a time on my current set up, i haven't gotten to the track, so no i actually wasn't there last saturday, i was working and couldn't make it to the track. on my old set up i never was able to get a decent time because i had some tranny/clutch problems. this was fixed over the off season and all is well now, so i should be able to do some nice times this season. i'm hoping to brake 11's when i finally get to the track this year.
i'm not impressed with those srt's running 14's. i ran a 13.8@101 when i was stock, there's no reason that the other srt's out there can't do the same. and i have an 03 and didn't have an lsd at the time.
turbo toys in a nut shell - intercooler sprayer (two modes, manual and automatic), four stage boost controller (0 = low boost, 1 = stock boost, 2 = limited boost in 1st and 2nd gear with full boost in 3 and 4, 3 = full boost all gears), and a high octane mode switch.
