Just picked up an '04... Tech Question
I just picked one up from a dealer the beginning of last week. A few days into it, it started acting up. Rough idle, stuttering at idle and during decel or cruising speed. And it's gotten worse and eventually pulled an engine code as random misfire. According to the dealer, this is not unheard of and in fact kinda common in the SRT-4. What they said after taking a look and flashing the ecu was that the plugs and wires in them were somehow faulty to the point where Dodge upgraded them later. My question is has anyone else heard of this? There's no recall, so I'm assuming they meant something more along the lines of a service bulletin, which would explain why the jerks didn't fix it before selling me the car. I tried replacing the wires with some aftermarkets purchased from Autozone.... no luck, still runs like a$$. Can't seem to find anyone who carries plugs except NAPA, but theirs doesn't specify it's for the SRT-4. Didn't know this until AFTER installing them and calling them to check when the idle didn't improve. So I'm guessin they sold me plugs for an N/A and didn't even carry em for the SRT-4.
Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

Olie70: I did alot of reading up on forums last night, and I'm thinking the same thing...TPS wire. Got a friend coming by today who's gonna help me take a look. I'm just surprised that the dealer wouldn't have discovered that when they had my car for an entire day to look at it. All the stories I've read up on talked about the TPS, nothing about wires or plugs, and yet the dealer didn't mention the TPS at all. Not happy with their service. Thanks for the advice!

I got an 04 also took it in for the same prob. they replaced the plugs per tsb one week later the check engine light popped on same problem running rough brought it back. it turned out my number 4 injector wasnt firing properly they put a new one in been running like a champ ever since. i would have them check that cause it sounds like the same prob to me.
Yes, the #4 sparker for some is troublesome, but it the problem sounds EXACTLY like mine and others on the forum. The dealer just wants to move product.....If you have any doubt about dealership, if you are under original warrenty and not under the dealers, find a decent dealer....they are out there....also, have them check the TPS wire harness also....sometimes it is the harness, but most of the time it is the wires connected to the white plug in, wire snaps inside and you can tell this if it goes limp, not straight like other 2......I cut and sliced an extension to the broken wire..( in Italy, no dealerships.....) Hope this helps.....
I just bought an 05 3 days ago. It has 342 miles on it and it seems to have a rough idle too. Should i be looking into the TPS also?

Thanks for all the advice guys! Turns out it WAS the TPS wire. Pulled it apart, soldered in an extra piece of wire, and voila! Most of the symptoms are gone. But, the engine light is still on and it feels like it's occasionally missing, so since the wire and plug replacement at the dealer will be free I'll let them do it anyway and see if that fixes the last of the problems. I suppose I can trust them enough to handle something as routine as that, and get em to flash the ecu again. Thanks again!

More probable solution:
Look into Motor mount inserts. The stockers have a ton of flex, and make the car feel like it is idling rough. Also, try replacing the spark plug wires with some aftermarket ones. I ran MSD's when I was stock and had a remarkable improvement in engine smoothness.

Also, post in your local forum, to see if anyone knows of a srt-4 friendly dealer, who is more comfortable; It made a world of difference to me.
