Default 3" down pipe

can i run a 3" downpipe into 2 1/2 exhaust if so would it make a very big difference?

Yeah, you can... It'll be an improvment. I put the needswings on with my mopar catback.

Deciding whether to do it or not really depends on the power level you're pushing or plan on going. When you start going over 300HP and/or upgrade the turbo 3" is the way to go. Though 2.5 is good up to around S3 power levels. Maxxfab says the Borla with 3" DP and 2.25 bottle neck removed made the same power as full 3" -

The Borla cat back exhaust system was designed to handle up to 320 horsepower. On a car with 3 inch O2 housing, IPP intake, running 18-19 psi, the 3 inch down pipe/Borla combination made the same horsepower as a 3 inch turbo back, 266 HP and 301 TQ. See Dyno Sheets page for actual graphs.

The differences aren't major untill you go big turbo and/or big power. Untill then it's more preference IMO.
