what INTAKE IS BEST????
just wondering.... y would u want a short ram? then engine compartment is so hot. ive never seen how long the cold air is but the ram is right on top and to me thats not a real good place for it. Im also in the market for an intake so ill be watching to see what the rest of u say.
There is a big discussion about the temp and intake, cai vs short ram. Who cares? The turbo is so damn hot anyway it doesn't matter how cool the air is coming in. 10 deg diff.???? Cooling the air is the job of the intercooler. I am by no means an engineer so don't take what I post as pro knowledge. I bought the aem because it's easy to install, looks good and sounds good. I notice a performance gain and that's all that matters to me.
There's another thread re: this issue as well- you can go there for more info. Alot of guys (incl. me) are going with the K&N full cai because it puts up better dyno numbers.
As for cai vs. short ram, my feeling is that if you aren't going to shroud the intake for heat protection, then it doesn't really matter which one you go with, because by the time the air from the cai gets to the back of the engine compartment it's already passed through the hot metal piping that sits over the engine, so I doubt there's much difference btn that and a short ram. I plan on putting some insulation around my intake, however, and I'm hoping this will be worth a couple horses- I figure the cooler the air is going into the i/c, the cooler it will be coming out.
But that's just my take.

I'm going with the K&N CAI. I too will probably be getting an intake tube wrap from DEI. I also have another great idea that I just thought of, getting the same heat reflective wrap for the IC hoses/pipes. Now that should help out quite a bit.[sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley16.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]

This one is covering a lot of ground, myself i have the AEM CAI, its a full 3 inch system. My previous was the K&N CAI which is a 2.5 inch pipe, both of which mount the filter in the lower left fender, and come with a splash screen to keep out water, mud, snow etc. If you only drive the car on weekends or something i would recommend leaving the splash shield off, you can really hear the turbo this way, its loud. But even with the splash shield installed, when your boosting there is no dought you have a turbo wineing away.
Either a short ram or a CAI is an improvement over stock, i did the hood air box mod on mine and was happy with it for a long time, but i needed the extra room under the hood for other mods so off it went.
On temperature, sucking in hot engine compartment air, or hot air off the road? Then that dosent matter as the turbo heats it up and like another post said, the intercooler cools it down. Its only a fraction of a hp and tq diff so its about what you want, you will pick up hp and tq with a short ram or CAI set up its just what you want under your hood. I have even seen cars that people removed the fog lights were the CAI can get more air to it, even a few homemade ram air systems useing the stock box and dryer tubing hooked to the fog light holes for more air.

...not forgetting to put some window screen material over the hole left by the fog light to keep critters, bugs and rocks out.....[&:]
