Default Impressed

Hey all,

New member, not a owner. Drive a 2001 Lightning that's stock... Anyway, just wanted to say that I am totally impressed. I raced a nice blue SRT-4 at the drag strip last weekend. This was my first time racing, best time of 14.6 in hot and humid Hawaii. We both had terrible launches, he ran a 15.39 to my 15.42.

I'm not starting a war here; he beat me straight up, we both had crappy launches, but I was just flat-out impressed how I had him beat for 3/4 of the track, and then he started pulling ahead like I was barely moving. It was close at the end, but his lead would have got better and better.

I love my Lightning (especially with the mods I have on the way), but as a second car, I'm thinking seriously about the SRT-4. Especially the one in Car and Driver's new 'Boost' magazine, with 600 lbs shaved off of it, with a carbon fiber hood, doors, etc. Beautiful and powerful... And a 4-door I might be able to sell my wife on as a "family" car.

You all take it easy, hope to run into more of you guys when I learn to launch.

You could do a lot worse than a SRT-4 as either a first OR second car!!!! Welcome to DF!![sm=smiley20.gif]

Thanks for the welcome. They are cool cars; it'd be a huge problem on a month-to-month basis... Mod the Lightning, or mod the Neon. Probably have to change to alternate.

Anyone know anything more about that SRT-4 in Boost magazine with all the lightweight components? That would probably be the first thing I did to the car, honestly, is remove weight as much as possible. They took off 600 pounds with various parts - carbon fiber hood and doors, lighter exhaust, etc. The car is already light as it is, plus removing all that weight... That would just be sick. A complete opposite of my truck. I'm not sure if there's a company selling all those parts... They said in the magazine that they're not available for sale yet, but that was Dodge. I would think the aftermarket would have pieces along the same lines...

A good place to look for carbon fiber parts is modernperformance.com as well as other parts for your SRT-4....[&:]

Thanks.

By the way, what kind've ETs are you modified guys putting down on 91-93 octane? I saw one post where they were talking about 12.9's on race gas, was interested to see if anyone is doing better on lower octanes, or if it's pretty much a requirement to run race gas to get into the 12's with these cars.

With lower octane the computer recognizes it and performance suffers...The owners manual recommends premium and the gauge on the dash has it written on it as well (they drop a lot of hints, huh?)[&:]

You have offically ran against the slowest SRT-4 I've ever even heard of. The slowest stock SRT-4 that I have ever personally seen ran a 14.2-14.3 in the 1/4. That SRT-4 you ran against was either driven by someone that has no clue as to how to drive or it was an SXT or an SRT-4 clone. I'm not saying anything bad about your Lightning, they are very quick, but a stock SRT-4 driven with experience turns 13.7-13.9 in the 1/4. The average times I've seen on the stock SRT-4's are from 13.7-14.3, depending on the driver and track conditions. Ever magazine that has ever tested an SRT-4 has fallen within this average. I wish I could afford another SRT-4 to just race with, so I could have my daily SRT-4 and my track SRT-4.[sm=smiley17.gif][sm=smiley2.gif] If your looking for a car, I highly recommend the SRT-4.[sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]

I...third that? Or...tri-form that? or...triplex that...perhaps it's triplet....[:@][&:]..anyway, I too agree that you should get an SRT-4..whatever the bloody format of "thirding" is.
