Cobalt SS w/ a 'M' Plate
For those who don't live in Michigan, the 'M' plates are for manufactures. This car was from GM for sure. The young kid behind the wheel was just itchin' to race, (Ok me to). We met up by the Willow Run airport service drive and as we merged onto the Ecourse Rd. service drive we started racing from a 55 mph roll. I floor it in 3rd gear. We were even for the first half of 3rd gear. Then slowly, very slowly I started to pull on him. By the end of third gear, my front seats were almost even with his front wheels. So I only gained a foot on him, and now I'm getting a little bit worried. Then I shifted into 4th and started pulling a little bit harder on him. By 120 mph my rear bumper just passed his front bumper, then he let up. We gave each other the thumbs up and went our separate ways.
I raced a stage 1 SRT-4 last weekend (+mopar exhaust & BOV). I pulled on him by ½ a car length per gear. That Cobalt SS from last night would have smoked the stage 1 SRT-4! Ouch.
From everything I've read on this forum, that Cobalt SS probably was not stock. But is the driver telling his GM buddies that he lost to a SRT-4. Are they going to up the power again on the Cobalt SS?[sm=yikesomg.gif]
P.S. Yea, the farming was good last night.

Something everyone overlooks on the SS Cobalts are this.....
1.) its a 2.0L
2.) its a coupe that actually weighs as much as the SRT-4
3.) its S/C'd, not a turbo
Truth is....shave the weight on it and toss that crappy wing and you might have an even steven race most of the time for a stock vs. stock. The Cobalt SS is in fact the SRT-4's best competitor for both price and performance. Yes, the WRX is in the picture...but not for the price comparison.
Also, the SS will get a turbo apparently next year....and I can say this much....if they were to beef it up to a 2.4L as well....I'd be willing to bet the SS would match the SRT-4. However, saying that, with the new 300hp hatchback abomination called the Caliber coming out..... it wont surprise me to see people swapping out that motor to their SRT-4 Neons...

it would be lots of fun to switch the motor out of the caliber into the neon but unfortantly the srt motor was redesigned and is much taller then what we got in ours, im not saying its impossible guys but probably more work then its worth. as for the caliber, i like the numbers its showing but i hate the way the damn thing looks and the interior is really crappy, my buddy works at a dealership and he drove just the 1.8 caliber and said it was the biggest piece of **** he has seen dodge put out in a long time, hopefully the srt version will be much better. anyways im still a strong believer that they should have made the razr concept now that would have been tight
a turbo is alot faster then a supercharger because the turbo has cold air coming in and that is what gives you the power i dont know alot about superchargers but i know that they are not that much powerful and they only push out half the power as a turbo if iw as told right

is it the same engine block as the 4 on the caliber?

No. The Caliber SRT-4 uses the 2.4 liter World Engine mancufactured in the Dundee, Michigan plant under GEMA (Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance). It has no similarity with the previous SRT-4's motor other than the fact that it is turbocharged, displaces 2.4 liters, and has four cylinders. The engine block itself is also aluminum, not cast iron like the previous SRT-4.
Hope I answered your question.
Hey Resevil, I was in GB Saturday. Ate lunch at Damons and went to go see the friggin mansion my cousin is having built out there. Place was huge. 4 car garage, 2 kitchens, theater room etc. etc. Haven't been to GB in a while, but geez, the houses aint gettin any smaller. If you saw a black '04 on Saginaw, may have been me.
Got my requisite bag of coneys from the newly remodeled Starlite in Burton and brought them back to K'azoo. In fact, I think I'll have one now. Yum!
