time for oil change questions
Unfortunately, I do not have MS excel so I could not veiw the filter test data. It would be interesting. It definitely sounds like he has his favorites. What I do know firsthand from living in Mi is just exactly how much inbreeding goes on between auto and auto parts manufacturers and it's A LOT. Just for example, I have worked at 2 different plastic plants (different companies) that both made parts for not only the "big three" but also some japanese companies. I had also applied to another company here that makes air filters. I dont even remember their name and the building would not cause you to look twice at it if you drove by, but they made automotive airfilters on contract for the big three and the aftermarket. I also know that sometimes one part can be made by several different places. Many of these smaller companies only produce enough to cover what the major manufacturer can't. A few years ago, I was told to be on the lookout for counterfeit AC/Delco oil filters. Externally they looked identical. They had the same packaging too, but the real McCoy(made here) had visible spot welds in the land under the gasket. The fake did not. You had to pull the gasket up to see. Just like the idea that there is really only 3 tire companies in the whole world. While this is basically true, I still believe in the old brand name to a degree. Many things are still produced in their original plants and often by the same people as have always done it even though they have been absorbed by some larger corporation. Example here being the idea that Fram is owned by Allied Signal. Allied Signal or not, Fram is probably still Fram but with bigger management. Since I could not read beyond the first page I don't know the specifics of the tests, but what I did see that was interesting was that the Mopar filter was the same as the Fram and another Fram was one of the best constructed he'd seen. And then a brand name that almost everyone would agree could be closely associated with high end and high quality stuff such as Bosch was rated poorly. Go figure. I also believe that generally and I mean very generally speaking, more money usually buys a better product (But not always- and that is why I shop around) The idea being that if a company charges more for their filter, tire, sparkplug or what have you, then it might be because they use higher quality components or constuction techniques but, we all know how often that line gets crossed. It is increasingly difficult to compare apples to apples these days. I guess what I'm saying here is that I still think the Fram is a decent product though according to someones testing, it may not filter as well as a more expensive filter does. (Gee, I might have guessed as much) but it's nice that someone went through the trouble to quantify his test results and post them for all to read however skewed by his own opinion they may be such as weather or not the bypass valve was plastic etc. etc. Even so, it does cause me to rethink what I know, and I try to be open minded. The Fram filter of today, is most probably in some way, not the Fram filter of yesterday.
I have a friend who uses a different filter every time. He never uses that same filter (brand) twice on a car. He says this way he will not get stuck using a bad filter every time. I just laughed and told him that was b/s. But ya know... even if 1 out of 4 filters is a quality piece, he is not doing that bad. haha
